My husband and I are in the process of winterizing our home, and one of the recommendations from our home energy rating was to install brush weather stripping on all of our exterior doors. We have three doors, each made of a different wood. The dining room is maple, the entry way is oak and the front door is a golden oak. Luckily we were able to find these "brush weather stripping" items at the Home Depot, but they were plain pieces of wood with a brush on the bottom half, and the wood portion needed to be stained and sealed. That's when we purchased Minwax stains and polyurethane.Non Stick Coatings Description
Luckily for us, Minwax made this urethane available in a nice small jar, containing just 8 ounces. We only needed a very small amount, so the size was perfect for us! The front of the container says this is a fast drying polyurethane clear gloss, and that it will provide superior durability and give us long lasting protection and beauty to our wood. The urethane is a clear, oil based, durable protective finish.Ceramic Coatings
This product is applicable for furniture, doors, floorsand cabinets and all wood surfaces.
Application
This product couldn't be easier to apply! You don't shake or stir the product like you would with Minwax stain, as you don't want to get any extra bubbles in the liquid urethane that could end up on your wood. The wood needs to be dry and in good condition, and after you have sanded it smooth, you apply one thin coat of the Minwax to the wood, using either a natural bristle or foam brush. After it has dried for 3-4 hours, you sand it down and apply another coat. A third coat can be applied if desired.
Thoughts
We remodeled our kitchen a couple of years ago, and our new Anderson dining room door has a clear polyurethane coating on it. It is a clear gloss that lets the beauty of the wood shine through, and it quite beautiful. I was hoping that this Minwax Clear Gloss Polyurethane would match the doors, but it was a real big disappointment. I followed the directions exactly, and even applied three coats, but my wood weather stripping never looked like it was coated, and it had NO gloss to it at all. The product gave off a odor that lingered for hours, and I recommend doing this in a well ventilated room. True to their claim, this did dry very quickly.
Clean up was not easy, but I have since noticed that Minwax makes a clear polyurethane that is water based, and I would purchase that the next time. I had to throw out my paint brush as I could not get it clean after using this product. It called for using mineral spirits or paint thinner to clean up with, but again I didn't have good results.
To put it bluntly, it looked simply like a wet piece of maple.Non Stick Pan Coating Considering this said it gave a gloss finish, I expected the wood to end up with somewhat of a shine, but that was not my experience. There is NO gloss to the wood whatsoever. I am very disappointed in this product. If you use it, I hope you have better results than I did.PTFE Coating
This retailed for around $4.50.
