Williams SonomaWhen I finally got these Star Wars Non Stick Coating pancake molds to work, I was very happy with the results. My best pancakes had almost the same golden-brown shade and neat edges as the product's promotional photos. And really, what Star Wars fan doesn't want to eat Darth Vader's face?
My first dozen or so attempts, however, were a disaster. The major problem with these pancake molds is that they aren't really non-stick. The directions say to spray them with non-stick cooking spray before use, but even with this help the pancakes were nearly impossible to remove from the mold.
A liberal coating of canola oil and gentle application of a butter knife helped, but whether or not the pancake came out of the mold nicely or tore in half seemed mostly up to chance. In addition, after a few uses the molds became difficult to remove because the metal handles got too hot to touch without a potholder.
The Yoda pancake mold posed another Teflon Coatings problem: at 7 3/4 inches wide, it was just too big for my largest frying pan. It shouldn't be a problem on a large griddle, but the size of the molds is something to keep in mind before you buy them.
I love the idea of these pancake molds, and I really like how the pancakes eventually turned out. Good pancakes should be simple, however, and these molds are way too much of a hassle for all but the most special of occasions.
